Letter from Domain Registry of America (DRoA)?

What to do when you receive a warning about your web address from the Domain Registry of America (DRoA)?

Online scams & tricksy sales tactics to be aware of - from SiteBites

We have had a few calls from customers of ours who have received a letter from the DRoA and panicked over a specific sentence in the letter. So we want to explain it here to anyone else who has received one.

Scan of a letter from the DRoA

The letter states:

Failure to renew your domain name by the expiration date may result in a loss of your online identity making it difficult for your customers and friends to locate you on the Web.

Any respectable domain registrar will ensure your website address (domain name) is renewed without the need for you to take action. We, along with most others, will notify you in advance of a domain’s expiration date that your web address will be renewed automatically unless you write to cancel.
So whilst this letter is correct in saying a domain that is left to expire could result in the ‘loss of your online identity’, that sentence is unnecessarily scary.

If you are at all uncertain, then contact the company with whom your website address is registered and speak to them! SiteBites can be telephoned on 0118 948 7025.

As far as we know this is a legitimate letter from a legitimate company. This article is simply meant to be a) a helpful explanation of how domain renewals usually work and b) encouragement not to panic when you get one of these, just call your existing domain provider/registrar!
